This article presents information on the book "The Roll-Call," by Arnold Bennett. The well-disposed but oft-affronted reader of Arnold Bennett may take up this book with good heart. It is not the work of the "sappy" journalist who duly produces snap-judgments on all conceivable topics. It is the Bennett of "The Old Wives' Tale" the subtle chronicler, the musing ironist. A misleading title, for this is not a war-story, or a during-the-war story, so much as a story of England, the England of Five Towns provincialism and London assurance, blundering towards a great hour of decision.
