This article presents information on the book " The Valley of Democracy," by Meredith Nicholson. Meredith Nicholson is a native of the Middle West, and yet by virtue of travel and temper is capable of looking at it with a certain detachment, while he is blessed with the Hoosier gift of utterance. If, then, his book leaves the Middle West still somewhat vague, still a good deal of a geographical expression, the explanation must be that, like a rare aroma, it is too intangible to be caught in a net of words and can only be sensed. The elusiveness of the Middle West is finely illustrated by the way in which it continually escapes Nicholson's friendly fingers.
