When, a few years ago, the American Association of University Professors was formed there seemed good reason for hoping that the gross infringements upon academic freedom will be effectively checked but it has failed to do so. Recently chancellor Edward C. Elliott of the University at Missoula announced that he had under the rules of the U.S. State Board of Education suspended professor Louis Levine from further duty as a member of the faculty of the state university, for insubordination and for unprofessional conduct prejudicial to the welfare of the university. The order of suspension followed close upon the publication by professor Levine of a monograph on "The Taxation of Mines in Montana."
