The study of the law of gravitation has never failed to attract mathematicians of the first rank since its discovery by scientist Isaac Newton in 1687. It is, in fact, only within the last two or three decades that the prediction of positions of the moon and planets could be made with an accuracy at all commensurable with that which can be obtained by observation. This brief summary is sufficient to indicate the condition of the science when the late George William Hill started his investigations. His first paper, published in 1859, when he was but twenty one years of age, is a half page note on the curve of a drawbridge.
