The recent serious and widespread uprisings in Egypt, regarding which scanty reports were published in the United States, resulted in vigorous action on the part of the British authorities and the dispatch to Egypt of General Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby as Special High Commissioner with "full discretionary powers." On April 22, at the height of the disturbance, President Woodrow Wilson recognized the British protectorate over Egypt which had been proclaimed on December 18, 1914. The address given in the article on the situation in Egypt and the policy of the British government, delivered by George Nathaniel Curzon in the Great Britain House of Lords on May 15, is taken from "The Times" (London) of May 16.
