This article focuses on U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and Walter Raleigh, an English statesman and explorer. If there seems to be aught unfitting or indecorous in any parallel between Walter Raleigh and Theodore Roosevelt, one has reason for hazarding the surmise that a coupling of the two striking personalities, whose varied exploits filled corresponding years of widely different centuries, would not have been displeasing to the later man. As explorers, the two adventurous spirits clasp hands across the centuries. Raleigh seeks a lost city of gold in the forests of Guiana, Roosevelt finds a new river of doubt in the forests of Brazil.
