This article briefly discusses the book "Pre-Meizi Education in Japan: A Study of Japanese Education previous to the Restoration of 1868," by Frank Alanson Lombard. The book throws light upon another question which no historian has yet dealt with adequately: How came it that Buddhism, the religion of peace and of the preservation of life, should, in Japan, have become the creed of the high-strung warrior? The Zen form of Buddhism has, indeed, been termed the "Religion of the Samurai." Japan had her Dark Ages as well as Europe, when her Government was forced to abandon all efforts for education.
