The article focuses on the books "The Beginnings of Buddhist Art," by A. Foucher and "Indian Painting," by Percy Brown. The problems of Indian archeology are made peculiarly difficult by the paucity of early historical records and by the scantiness and restricted character of the sculptures and paintings that have survived the vicissitudes of an exceptionally destructive climate and of a devastating iconoclasm during the rule of the Muhammadan invaders especially in the time of the bigoted emperor Aurangzib.
