Crossing from Serbia to Bulgaria quite lacks any dramatic elements. At the border, where the Bulgarian guard is, the countryside shows no sudden change. From Serbia into Bulgaria continue the endless fields of maize. Both countries are nations of small landed proprietors and similar. The bigotry of race and nationality has in Europe far eclipsed any bigotry of religion that ever existed. Torquemada had people burned at the stake for a belief or lack of belief, as a matter that could be altered by an act of the will.
