The article focuses on Field-Marshal Viscount French's Account of the operations of the British armies on the western front in 1914. It is the first authoritative narrative of that remote period of the war, in its larger aspects. It throws much needed light on several incidents of the 1914 campaign-incidents which at the time baffled and exasperated some millions of amateur strategists and tacticians. It makes fairly clear, at least from the standpoint of Viscount French, much that was puzzling in his relations on the one hand with the Secretary of State for War, Lord Earl Kitchener, and the British Government.
