The article focuses on academic autocrat W.O. Bentley. Bentley was in the golden prime of his reputation as a classical scholar when, in his late thirties, he became the head of Trinity. In his case there could be no sinister imputation of "inbreeding," since he was appointed, in due accord with a custom yet surviving among us, by commissioners (or trustees, if you like), who had no embarrassing knowledge of the conditions and needs of the college, and since he himself was absent from Cambridge since his youth.
