Two weeks ago there came out of the Caldwell, New Jersey, Penitentiary, one of the fairest and squarest and best of Americans. After nine months behind the bars because of his refusal to give his assent to what he considers an unpardonable crime of the State, the conscription of American youth for war, Roger Baldwin emerged as fresh, as unbroken in spirit as when h entered. He had no complaints to make for himself, he is even happy that he has learned to know in three prisons the system of penitentiary punishment for wrongdoing, as it is practiced in the U.S. Imprisonment, as he has seen it from the convict's point of view, he believes to be a total failure.
