This article focuses on the book "Idealism and the Modern Age," by George Plimpton Adams. The spirit of the modern age apparently goes counter to this idealistic conviction. Three forces have contributed to fashion the new spirit: a revolutionary economic order, experimental science, and democracy. Together they have produced an attitude toward life and the world as different from the ancient attitude as could well be imagined. The book is the first considerable effort to work free of the limiting conditions of the older idealism and of the newer pragmatism, and to reformulate philosophy and religion in terms of present-day insights and movements.
