This article presents information on the book "Amalia: A Romance of the Argentine," translated from Spanish by Mary J. Serrano. This book is a sign of that unintelligence which has companioned the vague brotherly "Monroe-doctrine" ardor of man, that while this story was translated into German and Russian many years ago, it is now for the first time made intelligible to readers of English. How little people know of the keen intellectual life of the great universities of South America, of her actual artistic achievements. "Amalia," is a romance in the best traditions of the mid-nineteenth century.
