The War's Philosophical Background

This article presents information on the book "The Present Conflict of Ideals," by Ralph Barton Perry. In an age of efficiency and popular pragmatism it is a joy to come upon a book devoted in all its 545 pages to the defence and illustration of the thesis that ideas count. Perry believes not only that the war has something to do with ideas, but that it has a background which may actually be called philosophical. Not that he believes the peoples of the world are consciously quarrelling and fighting over the technicalities of idealism and naturalism, as their ancestors did over the subtleties of the homoousian-homoiousian controversy.
