The article focuses on the book "The Development of the United States: From Colonies to the World Power," by Max Farrand. This is a book for Europeans rather than Americans, although the latter may read it with profit. It is a good, brief survey which treats of the essential movements and events in the history of the United States; it is perhaps as good a story of the country as can be told within the limits of 340 small pages. Short as it is, there is a great deal in the book that most men of fair education do not know, and an interpretation which historians of standing have never thought of making. The purpose of the work is indicated in the dedication to the Allies in the hope of a better understanding.
