Artist Mme Bernhardt last week commenced a brief season in New York at the Empire Theatre, receiving on the opening night a touching welcome, a tribute both to the genius of the artist and to the indomitable spirit of the woman. The three short plays in which she appeared were trivial things in themselves, but well adapted to display the distinctive powers of Mme Bernhardt triumphant over handicaps that would prove insuperable to a less accomplished artist.
