The article discusses the books "The Political Novel," by Morris Edmund Speare, "The Historical Novel," by H. Butterfield and "The Modern German Novel," by Harvey Hewett-Thayer. The political novel may be a thing in itself and Speare would like to give it an importance hardly less than that of the historical novel. Yet the curious fact remains that the political novel has not thrown its net about any deep-sea monsters. Speare has dredged up stolid flounders like Winston Churchill. He fails to show an octopus or a whale on his list.
