The article discusses the book "Willard Straight," by Herbert Croly. Once in the dismal days of the Washington Conference, when the outlook was dark for China and the Chinese delegates were losing all of their illusions and most of their hopes, an old and distinguished Chinese official, one of the advisers to his delegation, was talking to an American who had known Willard Straight intimately and long. "Ah, if only Willard Straight were still alive!" he sighed. "Then it would be different." This biography by Herbert Croly explains the Chinese statesman's sigh. There are on the whole just two kinds of men who go to China, or to other Far Eastern lands for that matter.
