The article focuses on the book "Clerambault: The History of a Free Conscience During the War," by Romain Rolland. The book represents a poet of national standing who at the outbreak of the war is an ardent patriot. His son's manifest disillusionment and eventual death in the trenches sets the father searching his heart. Like many another, under this ordeal the poet turns pacifist. His old colleagues attack him. Her soldier betrothed jilts the poet's daughter. His wife is disaffected. The poet himself becomes the center of a cyclone of hatred through which he walks serene, attracting or repelling every phase of spiritual reaction to the stimuli of wartime, until he is felled by the assassin's bullet.
