The article focuses on the socio-political conditions of Spain. The present situation in Spain is intolerable. It is the most surprising situation that has confronted any nation in Europe since the Russian Revolution. That situation has been little understood outside of Spain for the very simple reason that it came into being in 1917, when the world was absorbed in the war, and when, as regards Spain, the only question interesting abroad was the country's attitude toward intervention in the great conflict. However, the formulae of "pro-German" and "pro-Ally" meant little when applied to the episodes in Spanish political and social life, as a brief review of the outstanding facts will demonstrate.
