A Belated Romantic

This article focuses on the book "Pan," by Knut Hamsun. A romantic is one who attends to the wound rather than to the soul. He tells himself legends and creates sad and beautiful myths; he builds himself a refuge beyond, not within, his given experience. He denounces the world instead of trying to understand and reshape it. Perhaps he is right. Perhaps your wounds cannot be healed and the world is incurable. The case for that point of view is strong enough. Knut Hamsun has always seemed a romantic born out of his due time.
