At the end of the first performance of "Miss Lulu Bett" by Behnont Theater, it was difficult not to be persuaded that here was the most genuine achievement of the American stage since Eugene O'Neill's "Beyond the Horizon." One saw at once that Miss Zona Gale had not mechanically dramatized her novel, but had turned her original fable into a play and had given it in its new form a weightier and severer ending. The dramatic action which she had built up was, gave for a single debatable use of accident, the most inevitable that we recall in the work of any American playwright.
