On both sides of the Pacific the jingo press is "playing up" alarming stories that would seem to indicate a widening rift between the U.S. and Japan. Never has there been such need of plain talking on international relations, of a thorough understanding of the problems involved, of the principles at stake, and of the forces--that are driving the people toward the unspeakable calamity of war. It is axiomatic that it takes two to make a fight. There will he no war unless Japan wants it. Examining facts dispassionately one cannot avoid the conclusion that the Japanese-American situation abounds with inflammable material that needs only a spark to set oft another world conflagration.
