This article focuses on the books "Some Authors. A Collection of Literary Essays, 1896-1916," by Walter Raleigh, "The Continuity of Letters," by John Bailey, "George Gissing. A Critical Study" and "R. L. Stevenson. A Critical Study," by Frank Swinnerton. Raleigh's posthumous volume gathers up the best of the critical work which for one reason or another was never included in any volume while he lived. Sir Walter was sensible, direct, and imaginative, and he had the experience of life and literature which makes it possible to drive straight into the center of a great author.
