Sophistication

This article presents information on the book "Whatever We Do," by Allan Updegraff. This is a gay, sad, tumultuous, and on the whole completely unconvincing tale, told languidly and with careless inconsequence. Curiosity, a sense of the mystery of personality, of the ultimate insolubility of every phenomenon on which the eye lights, is a distinguishing characteristic of simple great books, as it is of man. Often, as in the case of "Whatever We Do," considerable talent has gone into their making. And often, as again in the case of "Whatever We Do," they are written with pity and humor.
