This article critically appraises the book "Mr. Weston's Good Wine," by T. F. Powys. In no other of Powys's fictions has the unique quality of his mysticism been expressed with such clarity and poetry. In the earlier volumes his intention had appeared to be a relentless depiction of the muddy, brutalized soul of the English peasant, and it did not require six books to make clear his ability to carry out that intention. Indeed, "Innocent Birds" and "Mockery-Gap" contained so much repetition, so much reworking of Powys's peculiar naturalistic formula, that he seemed to have obscured and buried forever the original vein which distinguished "The Left Leg" and "Mark Only."
