The article discusses the book "Manual of Modern Scots," by William Grant and James Main Dixon. The book begins with a detailed description of the sounds of Modern Sects interpreted by the alphabet of the International Phonetic Association. The study of phonetics and the use of this alphabet are now so widespread that the number of persons capable of following this description is vastly greater than it was twenty-five years ago. The knowledge of Scots shown by the authors is both wide and intimate; and their work has the advantage of being based on a found knowledge of comparative phonetics and broad linguistic scholarship.
