The article discusses two books, "The Strange Attraction," by Jane Mander and "The Cathedral," by Hugh Walpole. According to the author, it is true that Walpole uses much detail in the book "The Cathedral," but all this detail is relevant. It builds, slowly and inevitably, the atmosphere desired. All figures live in the shadow of the cathedral, Archdeacon Brandon the giant, his tall fair son Falk, his neglected daughter Joan, soft-voiced rotund intriguing Canon Ronder and the town gossips. The domination of the cathedral over human beings is expressed in words of Davray, a half-mad painter who says that the cathedral can bide its time. Just when a person thinks he is its master, the cathedral turns and stamps the person out.
