The End of Free Trade in England

The British Government's new Safeguarding of Industries Bill, printed in this article, is described as a measure "to impose duties of customs on certain goods with a view to the safeguarding of certain special industries and the safeguarding of employment in industries in the United Kingdom against the effects of the depreciation of foreign currencies, and the disposal of imported goods at prices below the cost of production, a!id for purposes connected therewith." Subject to the provisions of this act there shall be charged, levied and paid on the goods specified in the schedule to this act, on the importation thereof into Great Britain, duties of customs equal to one-third of the value of the goods.
