In this article, the author focuses on the book "Modern Essays," by Christopher Morley. The informality of the essay is undoubtedly the chief virtue of this style of writing, at least in our day and age. This is one outpost of Morley's conception of the essay. The other is apparent in the article which opens "Modern Essays" and which is nothing more or less than the first chapter of the author John Macy's "The Spirit of American Literature." Having pointed out one objection to Morley's book there is still another that must be aired.
