Abstract

A Note on Gluck

Sanborn, Pitts | December 10, 1924 issue

It is a distressing reflection that Gluck is no longer staged at the Metropolitan, but in justice to Mr. Gatti-Casazza one must not forget that during his sixteen years of directorship he has done what no other impresario ever did in America; he has produced three operas by Gluck, "Orfeo," "Armide," and "Iphigénie en Tauride"--the first in particularly artistic fashion and the two latter at least for the first time in this country. These are mere suggestions, based on observation, for the effective production of Gluck's operas. The operas themselves need no apology or defense. They are as stageworthy today as the day they were written.
