The article focuses on the book, "Wolfgang Goethe," by Georg Brandes. In accordance with its underlying plan the book unrolls the development of Goethe's mind as reflected in his verse and prose, in his scientific publications, in his attitude to the great social and political problems of his day, and last but not least in his relations to his contemporaries. But the author does not stop there. He skillfully interweaves critical discussions of the lyrics, novels, and dramas. He brings to his task intimate familiarity with his material and that acumen which has made of him one of the pathfinders in modern criticism.
