The article focuses on the book "Social Organization," by W. H. R. Rivers and edited by W.J. Perry. Had Rivers lived, his definitive work on social organization would have been little short of an event in ethnology. As it stands, the fragmentary treatise presents a carefully reasoned and lucidly written summary of some of the outstanding facts and theories in the field of primitive society and politics. Unfortunately it is only too apparent that the piece is but a skeleton of the much more comprehensive work for the writing of which Rivers was so splendidly equipped.
