The article presents information about the books "Selections from the Correspondence of Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge, 1884-1918" and "Henry Cabot Lodge: A Biographical Sketch," by William Lawrence. Both the U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and the U.S. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge were good practical politicians and could feel the public sentiment shrewdly and correctly; but it was almost always for their own purposes. Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt outlines for Lodge a speech attacking his own supporters in the Civil Service Reform movement and urges him not to show mercy.
