This article focuses on the book "Goethe's Literacy Essays," arranged by J.E. Spingarn. The essays and reviews that constitute this volume have never before been assembled in any language in a single book. That book is, therefore, from now on an indispensable one to the student of poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In his twenty-fourth year, Goethe had completely thought out the liberation of the artist from the preceptists of his century. It was from Goethe the poet that Goethe the critic learned to know the fundamental nature of art as the expression of experience.
