The development of the art of printing has made possible the production of beautiful books in great quantities at low cost. And free public education has endowed the average citizen with the training for enjoyment of good literature. The author's public is now potentially as extensive as the entire citizenship of the land. In other fields the benefits of modern processes and methods have been passed on to the consumer, but in the field of books prices have steadily risen. The average novel is now sold at from two dollars to three dollars and non-fiction at from three to five dollars.
