What Is to Happen to Germany?

From the articles that have appeared in the American press on the recovery of Germany during the last ten years there is grave danger that the American public will form an opinion about Germany's future that is not warranted by the facts. There is perhaps no country in the world where the masses, who now at least in theory govern the state, follow the leaders of thought as much as they do in Germany and where the newspapers are so largely devoid of sensation and devoted to the discussion of political and economic problems. It is therefore fairly safe to assume that if one speaks the language, talks with all classes, confers with leaders, and reads the current literature, one will have a more accurate index of conditions than could be obtained in a touring car, a theater, or a hotel patronized largely by Americans, or even by reading a report of an expert commission.
