The article presents two books on politics and history. These include "An Appreciation and Some Reminiscences," by John Viscount Morley and "A Historical Study," by Edmund Burke. If there is one principle, which Morley whole-heartedly agrees with in, Burke's political creed it is that in practical government expediency is superior to considerations of abstract right. This belief may seem strange in the author of the celebrated essay on "Compromise," where the duty of living in strict compliance with one's inner convictions is vigorously maintained. But Morley would have denied that there was any inconsistency in the two views, for he held that public morality and private morality were two distinct things.
