This article briefly discusses the book "The Old Mission Churches and Historic Houses of California," by Rexford Newcomb. It is at a particularly fortunate time, therefore, that this book appears; and its sound research and careful appreciation should be now particularly valuable. For the first time the reader is able to grasp the significance of the Spanish work in California; for the first time there is presented a though and readable account of its historical background. It is a fascinating story, one that is already growing its legends of miracles--this penetration from Mexico northward.
