This article briefly discusses the book "The Origin of the Next War," by John Bakeless. This searching book is an answer to the above questions, and it is an answer to confound the optimist. Its author is not a man to be fooled. He pays his compliments to "the ferocious patriots safe and sound in comfortable clubs at home" during war time, refuses to "overestimate the value of a statesman's pledge," knows that the violation of Belgium was only "a first-class refrain for recruiting sergeants who might have experienced considerable difficulty in elucidating the true inwardness of the relations between the French and British general staffs.
