Some 6,000 persons were beguiled to Scarsdale, a suburb of New York City, on a Saturday in May to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the Battle of White Plains. Most of them had never heard of the battle before, but the day was a pleasant one for an outdoor excursion and they were quite ready to believe what the newspapers told them, that the engagement was one of the most important of the Revolutionary War. And they had heard of the Revolutionary War even if they had ceased to care what it was about. Besides the United States Army was to be present--in maneuvers.
