The Yiddish stage creative life is ebbing fast. There are more Yiddish theaters than ever, but nothing new has been written for them in years, except musical comedies differing very little from those on Broadway. The final stand of serious Yiddish drama, the Yiddish Art Theater, is planning in the future to alternate its Yiddish program with English; and an organization called the Anglo-Jewish Theater at the 66 Fifth Avenue Playhouse is producing Yiddish classics in English. As for contemporary literature, it is something of academic or--to use an East Side paraphrase--of cafe interest only.
