Not only are Chinese funerals colorful and festive occasions for the public, but provision is made for the traveler's own comfort on his long and dangerous journey. He is sent off well supplied with food and utensils and some of his favorite knick-knacks. A Chinese gentleman, recently deceased, even had the comfort of taking with him into the next world, his new and much-prized motor car. Whether these arrangements actually ease the voyager on his lonely way a Drifter cannot pretend to guess. At least they relieve the emotions of those left behind and create a public diversion contrasting pleasantly with the dismal pomp of even most magnificent Western funerals.
