Militarism or Education in Virginia?

The article discusses state funding of education in America. Is a State justified in appropriating funds for the support of an institution which is almost purely military in character? In so far as the State of Virginia is concerned, a commission of eleven prominent citizens of that commonwealth has answered this question emphatically in the negative. In a report to the legislature of the Old Dominion, made public on December 30, 1927, the commission recommends unanimously that the Virginia Military Institute be discontinued at once as a State-supported institution, on the ground that the students devote most of their time to military theory and practice at the expense of subjects which are culturally and vocationally, much more important.
