This article focuses on the motion pictures. In considering works of literature and drama we have come to recognize that the mere sequence of events described does not constitute their whole story. The manner in which the events are described and unfolded is as much a part of the story as are the events themselves. The same consideration obviously applies to the motion picture. Like novels and plays the motion picture tells the story with a multitude of means, which all contribute to the total effect. The only difference is that its means are peculiarly its own, and especially so in the case of the silent picture.
