In the numerous recent attempts at college reform in the pages of the magazines a basic point has been usually overlooked, namely, that the college, represents a cross-section of the community. Therefore all hopes for any thoroughgoing reform of the college are likely to prove illusory until the society of which it is a part has itself undergone radical changes. Today the college degree has become the objective of hundreds of thousands of high-school graduates whose main qualification in the majority of cases for a career of scholarship is the ability to pass a set of rather perfunctory high-school requirements and the financial ability of their parents to stand four additional years of economic non-productivity.
