This article presents information about the book "Nippon Shindo Ron or the National Ideals of the Japanese People," by Yutaka Hibino and translated by A. P. McKenzie. The book goes far to explain the type of mind the middle-school student of Japan exhibits on graduation. The Japanese Department of Education has authorized the use of book as a textbook for all middle schools. It is significant that the editions of "Nippon Shindo Ron" include laudatory marginal notes made by General Maresuke Nogi, hero of the Russo-Japanese war.
