The Dominant Sex

This article discusses the position of woman in the U.S. Many expositions of doctrines on sex relations assume that man subjugated woman in savage society and that he consciously seeks to keep her subjugated in civilized society. In 1917 the women of New York State after much travial and hysteria at last achieved the right to vote. But among the Iroquois tribes which inhabited that State before modern padlocking refinements were introduced, all adults, male and female, belonged to the tribal council, which gave them equal suffrage on a democratic basis. The Egyptian woman, married or single, made contracts in her own right and for her own benefit. She could bring action at law and plead her own case in court.
