Abstract

It Seems to Heywood Broun

The novelists of today don't cater to Aunt Clara very much. She found "All Quiet on the Western Front" extremely sordid. Still, practically all the plays in town are written just to please her. She lives in Pelham and knows very little about Freud or Jung. The author tried to convince her once that practically all of what people know as the civilized world is inhibited. She interrupted to say that the last lecturer at the Woman's Study Club had advanced the same claim about Mars. Maybe it would be just as well to leave Aunt Clara out of the discussion and go on to explain why the so-called gloomy modern novel is really more stimulating to the ego than the aggressively cheerful modern play.
